DD Free Dish auction fetches Rs 65.5 crore
According to senior officials, the auction was held yesterday in which 18 private broadcasters participated.

"Total 10 slots were auctioned. 18 broadcasters participated. The reserve price was 4.8 crores. Highest bid went up to 7.3 crores. We collected 65.5 crores in a day," DG Doordarshan Supriya Sahu told PTI.

"This takes our revenue to more than 250 crores from DD Free Dish this year," she added.

Officials said that it is also a win-win situation from the consumer point of view as they will get to watch several new channels.

Stage set for Freedish-encrypted MPEG4 STB rollout as DD shortlists 5 suppliers

MUMBAI:  Five set-top box (STB) manufacturers have been selected by Doordarshan for supplying encrypted MPEG4 STBs for its free direct-to-home (DTH) platform Freedish. These original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are Modern Communication and Broadcast System, Velankani Electronics, BGM Holding Company, KMTS Engineering, and Millennium Technology. The authorised OEMs will integrate their STBs with the iCAS and DD-approved firmware/middleware. The STB OEMs will be required to provide the duly certified integration testing report from the iCAS OEM and the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification. DD will test five such STBs and, on successful integration and testing of the STBs, it will issue a letter of intent to the STB OEM. The STB OEM will be required to submit the requisite performance bank guarantee (PBG) amount to Doordarshan within 15 days of the issue of the letter of intent. After receipt of the PBG amount, Doordarshan will enter into an agreement with the STB OEM, authorising it to sell iCAS and DD-approved firmware/middleware-enabled STBs in India for reception of DD Freedish service.

The STB OEMs will have to contact ByDesign in Bangalore for all STB integration and certification related to iCAS platform. Earlier DD DG Supriya Sahu had told TelevisionPost.com that the encrypted STBs would be rolled out in April. The rollout of encrypted STBS will allow Freedish to keep a tab on its subscriber numbers. It will also help in increasing the channel-carrying capacity to 104 channels, up from the 80 channels it offers currently. In September 2015, Doordarshan had set in motion the process of rolling out encrypted MPEG 4 STBs for Freedish with the issue of tender for appointing authorised STB OEMs. The e-application was issued on 20 September. The delivery period of STBs is three months. The target is to provide 250 channels through the MPEG 4 STBs. Freedish will also get additional transponders for expanding its service. “We will get additional transponders for providing 250 channels. Currently, we have six transponders,” Jha had added. Freedish currently provides 80 TV channels and 30 radio channels through MPEG-2 STBs. This is likely to be enhanced to 104 SDTV channels and 40 radio channels in the near future with the introduction of new MPEG-4, DVB-S2 stream.

Private broadcasters avoid DD Free Dish auction amid fee hike

DD Free Dish auction was scheduled to take place on 11 April but the broadcaster didn’t receive any applications for participation.

State broadcaster Doordarshan’s free-to-air direct-to-home (DTH) platform DD Free Dish failed to receive any applications for a planned auction to award channel slots to private broadcasters, a few weeks after it raised the reserve prices for its platform.

The auction was scheduled to take place on 11 April but the broadcaster didn’t receive any applications for participation, following which the auction was cancelled, said two people familiar with the development, who did not want to be named.

Recently DD Free dish announced its 34th online e-auction on 9 May 2017 for filling its vacant DTH slots on DD Free dish direct to home platform.
In this auction three general entertainment channels; Sony Wah, Zee Anmol Cinema, and 9X Jalwa – have renewed its slot on Doordarshan’ s DTH platform FreeDish.

After final trials of DD Freedish MPEG4 and the success of the 32nd e-auction in February, the reserve price for the next auction has been raised to Rs 80 million from Rs 48 million per slot. Until last year, the reserve price was Rs 43 million but only one channel fetched the bid of Rs 70 million in the e-auction completed on 14 February 2017.


As per information received that existing DD Freedish viewers will continue to get 80 TV channels and 32 radio channels, but for accessing all new (MPEG-4) channels will have to obtain iCAS-enabled authorized set-top boxes. Doordarshan FreeDish will remain free to air with no monthly fee; the DD Freedish viewers will be required to register with DD FreeDish on getting the new iCAS STB from Doordarshan authorized STB dealers.

In the recently online e-auction (35th E-auction) completed by Prasar Bharati, Mutliplex channel didn't able to won the slot on DD Freedish. Same slot won by NewsX TV channel.

The number of free TV viewership households in India is estimated to touch 46 million by 2020, a growth of over 50 per cent, mainly due to the rise of state- run DTH operator DD Free Dish, said a report by global consultancy EY. There were 30 million free TV households in the country in 2016. The growth in free TV viewership will be in addition to consumption of content on mobile digital terrestrial television (DTT) handsets, the report said. “The free TV market in India is poised to grow primarily due to the rise of DD Free Dish, which has now become the largest DTH operator in the country,” said the EY report, titled India’s Free TV – a game changing opportunity. DD Free Dish, the state-run DTH provider, is the largest TV distribution company in the country with over 20 million subscribers, more than national pay TV companies, which average 8 million to 16 million each. With over 80 channels currently, DD Free Dish plans to add 104 more by 2017-end and eventually take the count to 256 by 2020. The subscriber base of DD Free Dish is projected to reach around 40 million in the next 2–3 years.

DD earns Rs 85 cr from auction of 11 slots on its DTH platform

The auction of 11 slots of Doordarshan's direct-to-home (DTH) platform--DD Free Dish-- today earned the public broadcaster an amount of Rs 85.10 crore.

"Total 11 DTH slots were auctioned today...earned a total revenue of Rs 85.10 crore in a day," DG Doordarshan Supriya Sahu said.

In today's auction, three slots were for 'news and current affairs channels' with a reserve price of Rs 6.50 crore. For this category, the maximum and minimum bids received were Rs 6.70 crore and 6.50 crore respectively, she said.

On the other hand, eight slots were meant for 'non news and current affairs channels' with a reserve price of Rs 8 crore. For this category, the maximum bid was of Rs 8.40 crore, while the minimum bid was to the tune of Rs 8 crore.

As per data, 'DD Free Dish' currently reaches 22 million homes in India with a bouquet of 80 channels.

Next version of 'DD Free Dish' will provide 104 channels with set top boxes.

Star Sports to launch free-to-air sports channel

After its regional foray with Star Sports 1 Tamil, Star Sports is set to launch India’s first private free-to-air sports channel, Star Sports First.

The channel will go on air on July 21 on DD’s FTA DTH platform Freedish. It will allow sports fans to watch their favourite sports in Hindi without paying any fee, a media release issued by Star Sports said.

The channel will also air VIVO Pro Kabaddi League Season 5 which will begin in Hyderabad on July 28. Its programme calendar will also include BCCI domestic cricket tournaments and domestic football tournaments, etc.

A Star India spokesperson said: “Television penetration in India has grown exponentially. We recognise that there is a very sizable subset of this universe that is not on conventional pay TV. In the `Free-to-air’ content that they have access to, sports content is mostly absent and only sporadically available. It is our belief that there is an eager appetite for it.”
